Venting seems healthy in a lot of ways but it is so easy to cross over to just being a complainer. i had to be extra careful today NOT to be a complainer. Yeah, there are some things in my life that stress me out, and sort of stink. but on the whole, i have not a lot to complain about. so the opposite of complaining:
3 things that were AWESOME about today.
1) I went to spa night!!
2) I was with good friends!
3) I had sesame balls with chocolate syrup!!!
First world problems are for some reason, more damaging to psyche and health! After seeing people living in mud houses in Bolivia with no plumbing, I don't know how they just smile and smile and all I can do is feel depressed and negative about myself and life when I live in the US. I don't know where the solution lies, but maybe in devaluing those things that cause us so much stress: money, career, car, control, even plumbing! haha. I think part of it may be mentally devaluing them, and focusing on the simple things that are really the most powerful: relationships, personal growth, nature, etc.
ReplyDeleteps. also, I've noticed since I've been back how obsessed with control North Americans are. Like, every tiny detail.. personal space, time, attention, order, placement, etc. The pace of life in SA is insane... people are slow, people are flaky, meetings start when they start, invoices are paid when they're paid, homeless dogs bark all night and no one cares, kids run around screaming in restaurants and no one cares, etc. And, the people there seem so much happier.
ReplyDeleteIn the first world, we're battling against cultural pressures and norms (mostly handed down by capitalism) that are dictating to us what we need to worry about/stress about. It's kind of an impossible battle. Step back and realize you're being told to freak out, but you don't have to if you don't want to. Don't live in fear of the repercussions. This is the kind of battle we face. Our repercussions have the potential to be huge, yes, but our spirit and soul are more important, and can survive in spite of them. This is personal strength. You see examples of this amazing strength all over the place, even today.
